Successful local Brain Bee March 18, 2023.
We had another successful local brain bee here in Hayward. We had 136 register for info since the end of the last bee in March 2022. We had 58 RSVP for the 2023 bee, and we had 44 of those show up (no worries sometimes people get sick or busy). Of those 44 who took the Round 1 exam, we planned to select the top 25 for Round 2, but took in 30 because #25-30 all got the same score (8 of 15 MCQ). It took 24 verbal questions in Round 2 to determine our top 3 winners (who got 22, 21, and 19 correct respectively. 1st place was Shreya Thota (Vista del Lago High School), 2nd place was Jeonghyun An (Basis Independent Silicon Valley HS), and 3rd place was Alan Zhong (BASIS Independent Silicon Valley HS). Congratulations to all of the competitors. Top 3 finishers got text books (my favorite ). And the 1st place student will compete in nationals in Irvine next month!

News about funding Bay Area Brain Bee:
We are pleased to announce that for students needing financial assistance, the SuperMindLab.org will fund the workshop and contribute towards funding the flight and hotel for the winner and adult guardian. We are still soliciting more funds from organizations and individuals to fund the local brain bee activities. We may create a Go-Fund-Me or Donors-Choose. Our annual budget is a few thousand dollars, mainly to fund the flight and hotel for the winner and adult guardian. If your adults know of a business willing to sponsor the Bee, we are happy to publicly acknowledge their support.

About the 2021 Bay Area Brain Bee:
At this time, the USA National Brain Bee organization will host a National Brain Bee competition April 9-11, 2021, that will be done online. We are very sorry to announce that there are no plans to host a 2021 Bay Area Brain Bee competition at CSU East Bay, but we will be hosting several educational online events, including a high-school neuroscience symposium, and recognition of neuroscience-related projects by high school students (essays, projects, artwork).
We are aware that the International Brain Bee organization has tentatively scheduled an International Brain Bee for August 12-15, 2021. However, since State and County public health guidelines prohibit large, in-person gatherings, it is unlikely that Brain Bee competitors will be able to compete and qualify for the International Brain Bee championships.
In this unprecedented situation, the Bay Area Brain Bee team remains committed to providing an engaging opportunity for young students to demonstrate their neuroscience knowledge in a fun format. Currently, our plans are to host a Neuroscience Celebration (dates TBA) in place of our normal BABB competition that will focus on creating local awareness around neuroscience topics, expanding your knowledge of the nervous system, and making connections with other neuroscience peers. This event will be free and open-to-the-public. Students who wish to present their neuroscience related research (based on experiments or library research) can submit their presentation here before March 7.
Stay tuned for more information!
